Where to Donate Old Books

Where to Donate Old Books

Readers love to fill up their homes with the warmth that a full bookshelf can bring. We have all seen the pinterest images of rooms filled with books from the floor to the ceiling. For some of us, we simply do not have enough space! Luckily, your books can still be put to good use when you treat others to the gift of reading!

Below are 8 suggestions for where you can donate your old books.

Nonprofits

1. Goodwill

"Goodwill works to enhance people’s dignity and quality of life by strengthening their communities, eliminating their barriers to opportunity, and helping them reach their full potential through learning and the power of work." For their mission, Good will accepts donations to enhance local and international communities.

2. Habitat for Humanity

"Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. We believe affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities." This organization builds more than houses. They build homes which includes accepting donations from books to furniture for families in need.

3. Reader to Reader

"Reader to Reader’s Book Donation Program has donated millions of books to schools and public libraries. We provide district-wide book donations for public schools in low-income areas, and state-wide donations for public libraries."

4. Prison Book Program

"We believe that everyone has a right to read, and that books are tremendous sources of enlightenment, enjoyment, and transformation. We also strive to lessen the dehumanization and isolation of incarceration by providing our readers with a connection to a community of caring people."

Your Local Community

5. Libraries

As we all know, libraries have always been the greatest home for all types of books. If it is time to take your books to their home, head to your local library.

6. Retirement Homes

Nothing is more comforting than a good book. Give back to the seniors in your community by reaching out to see if they are in need of book donations.

7. Public Schools

Books are the foundation of education. Allow the kids in your community to find the love of reading by reaching out to see if they are in need of book donations.

8. Friends/Family

You can't forget about the people closest to you! Maybe, you just read a book that reminds you of your best friend. Maybe, you remember hearing your sister has been wanting to get into a new genre of reading. Pass along the joy of reading to your family and friends by recycling your old books.
